Nestled 275 km from Nice, the town of Sault marks the beginning of the climb to the “Géant de Provence,” Mont Ventoux. Standing at 1909m above sea level, it may not reach the heights of the great Alpine passes, but it’s a challenge not to be underestimated. From Sault, cyclists face a 24 km ascent, climbing 1217m through the stunning landscape of Provence.
At the summit, if the weather is on your side, you might catch a glimpse all the way to the Pyrenees, where the route eventually crosses into Spain. The descent to Malaucène is even steeper, dropping 1550m over 21 km of thrilling downhill.
Mont Ventoux is known for its strong winds, which can occasionally be so intense that they close the road.
